English as a Second Language (ESL)
Being able to communicate well in the English language is essential for success in the United States. The
Racine Literacy Council ESL program is designed to help adults speak, understand, read, and write English.
Each adult student is paired with a trained volunteer tutor. In addition to tutoring English, tutors help students achieve many life skill goals. Goals include obtaining a driver's license, helping their children with school work, and becoming a United States citizen.
The majority of adults in the ESL program have moved here from Mexico, Eastern Europe, and Korea. Tutors report that they have benefited from the association with their students as much as the students have.
